Sterling Silver
The more you wear it, the more it shines. That said, everyone's skin is different — body chemistry, sweat, and summer heat can darken silver or leave it looking dull. That's normal, and it's fixable.
To clean it, you have a few options:
- A jewellery cleaning cloth works great.
- Mild soap, warm water, and a soft brush (a toothbrush or nail brush does the job).
- The classic trick: line a small bowl with aluminium foil, add hot water, two tablespoons of cleaning vinegar, and a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda. Submerge the piece for a couple of minutes, scrub gently, rinse, and done.
Storing silver
Silver oxidises in contact with air — so if you're not wearing a piece for a while, wrap it in tissue paper and seal it in a small zip-lock bag. Not the most glamorous solution, but it's the jeweller's trick that works.
A note on stones
Stones are set in a way that lets light pass through them — that's what makes them sparkle. Creams, oils, and lotions clog that space and kill the shine. Put your jewellery on last, after skincare and perfume.
Gold-plated pieces
Gold plating is a very thin layer bonded to silver. Friction removes it — so no scrubbing, no soap, no water. A dry soft cloth is enough. The good news: we plate with 24K gold, which oxidises less than lower karats, so it won't darken over time. It will wear with use, and it can fade faster depending on your skin's pH and chemistry — that's just the nature of plating.
For solid gold pieces, jewellery cloths work well, or you can clean them the same way as silver.
Plata de ley
Cuanto más la llevas, más brilla. Dicho esto, cada piel es diferente — el pH, el sudor y el calor del verano pueden oscurecerla o dejarla mate. Es normal, y tiene solución.
Para limpiarla, tienes varias opciones:
- Un paño especial para joyería funciona muy bien.
- Jabón neutro, agua tibia y un cepillo suave (un cepillo de dientes o de uñas va perfecto).
- El truco clásico: forra un bol pequeño con papel de aluminio, añade agua caliente, dos cucharadas soperas de vinagre de limpieza y una cucharadita de bicarbonato. Sumerge la pieza un par de minutos, frota suavemente, aclara y listo.
Cómo guardar la plata
La plata se oxida en contacto con el aire — así que si no vas a llevar una pieza durante un tiempo, envuélvela en papel de seda y métela en una bolsita zip. No es lo más elegante, pero es el consejo joyero que funciona.
Una nota sobre las piedras
Las piedras están engastadas de forma que la luz las atraviesa — de ahí su brillo. Las cremas, aceites y lociones obstruyen ese espacio y apagan el destello. Ponte las joyas siempre al final, después del skincare y el perfume.
Piezas bañadas en oro
El baño de oro es una capa muy fina adherida a la plata. La fricción la elimina — nada de frotar, jabón ni agua. Un paño suave en seco es suficiente. La buena noticia: bañamos con oro de 24K, que se oxida menos que otros quilates, así que no se oscurecerá con el tiempo. Sí se irá desgastando con el uso, y puede desvanecerse más rápido según el pH y la química de tu piel — es la naturaleza del chapado.
Para piezas de oro macizo, los paños de joyería van bien, o puedes limpiarlas igual que la plata.
